End-of-tenancy cleaning: the checklist to get your deposit back

Moving out of a rental in the Netherlands? This end-of-tenancy cleaning checklist covers what landlords inspect — so you hand back the keys with confidence and protect your deposit.

When you move out of a rental, the home is expected back clean and undamaged. A thorough end-of-tenancy clean is the surest way to protect your deposit. Here's what inspections focus on.

Kitchen

Landlords look hardest here: a degreased oven, hob and extractor, cupboards clean inside and out, a descaled sink and taps, and a fridge/freezer emptied, defrosted and wiped.

Bathroom & toilet

Descale and disinfect the shower, bath, sink and toilet, remove limescale from tiles and glass, and clear every drain. Mould in the grout is a common deduction — deal with it.

Floors, walls & fixtures

Vacuum and mop all floors, wipe skirting boards, doors and switches, remove scuffs from walls where you can, and dust light fittings and radiators.

Windows & the little things

Clean the windows inside, wipe sills and frames, empty and wipe every cupboard and wardrobe, and don't forget the balcony, storage box and communal stairwell if they're yours.

Proof it was done

Photos of the cleaned property protect you if there's a dispute. Every visit we make is logged by NFC and AI photo-reviewed, so you get a timestamped record to show your landlord.
